In my devotion I was reading Luke 13:11-12. I am quite sure because my sisters of the DIVAS Ministry and I had been talking about low self-esteem that I looked at this passage in a different personal light.
Luke 13:11-12 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
In the Greek, infirmity (astheneia) literally means to “want of strength”. Notice the scripture says she had a “spirit of infirmity”…..not just that she “had an infirmity”. Could it be possible that this woman’s physical ailment was a direct result of some emotional or spiritual battle? Emotional wounds, if not treated immediately, can affect you physically.
Notice Jesus says “Woman, thou art (present tense) loosed (past tense) from thine infirmity.” This woman had already been healed and set free from the condition that kept her bowed together, and looking down.
Some of us have allowed our “spirit of infirmity”, specifically called low self-esteem, keep us from looking up to what already has been done. Isaiah 53:5, “He was wounded for our trangressions…….and with his stripes we are (presently) healed” (past tense).
Low self-esteem weakens us. When we carry ourselves in a bowed together state, we are not looking up to the hills from whence cometh our help. When we are in our bowed together state of mind, we hurt ourselves physically-----weight issues, feelings of inadequacy, feeling unattractive are all symptoms of the emotional and/or spiritual problem. Once you discover the root, the origin of your low self-esteem, then it is time to administer God’s prescribed Word.
T.D. Jakes said, “Although the problem may be rooted in the past, the prescription is a present word from God…..the word you are hearing today is able to heal your yesterday!”
This woman carried her infirmity 18 years….mine has been with me twice as long……..It’s time for me to lift up & look up. I’m listening to the command….”Roline, thou art loosed..”
